Jungleman became the favorite poker player of many people when he appeared online. He was the most successful player in 2010 and was at the time considered the best NLHE heads-up player by many. Since the Macedo-scandal, however, his popularity has significantly decreased.
The scandal might be the exact reason why Jungleman is now inviting the whole world to accept his challenge:
“I’m sick and tired of all the negative publicity the game of poker has received in the past few months. As someone who loves the game, I think the poker world deserves to know who the best poker player on the planet is. I’m confident that it’s me. If anyone has the nerve to take me on, let them come to Prague in December and sit down across from me at the table.”
As it has been said, the game played would be NLHE at €200/€400 stakes and a €100,000 starting stack, with an option to rebuy for a limited time. The challenge will take place on the 6th December in Prague (housing the WPT and EPT at the time).
If somebody accepts the challenge, the event will have a live stream boradcast with a 15-minute lag.
The match is greatly anticipated by the public, and Tony G already said he would accept the offer if it provided slightly better conditions. Apparently, Tony G feels he has an edge over Cates when it comes to live poker.
This is what Tony G wrote about the event on the Party Poker blog:
"I wasn’t initially looking to go to WPT Prague on December 1st but the more I hear about the tournament and the city, the more I am convinced it will be a feast. It has been a few weeks now since Jungleman challenged the world to a heads-up game for 100k. You know me, I think the challenge is a great idea – anything to bring excitement and a buzz to the poker world has to be welcomed. However, as i have said from the start there needs to be some sort of incentive to do this – Cates really needs to dangle a carrot.
If the conditions were right i would do this as i say in the video below. I have heard Jungleman would struggle with the live environment and a bit of table talk – i think i would have an edge. I made a mistake earlier in the year playing the Isildur challenge – I cannot beat these kids online when they are sat in the dark with forty screens but in the live environment it isn’t dark and there are not forty screens and hundreds of mouse clicks every minute. I just need the right offer. Is there a winners bonus – is there a bet? As Yevgeniy and Sorel say in the video there needs to be more.
Daniel ‘Jungleman’ Cates I am waiting to hear if you can make an offer. If not me, why don’t you play Sam Trickett? I suspect people would like to see how he takes to jungle life more than me!"
Jungleman12 has not yet reacted to Tony G's open letter.
